Musée de la Vie Romantique (Museum of Romantic Life)

This museum has retained the charm of this Nouvelle Athènes mansion which was formerly owned by the painter Ary Scheffer and his nephew, the author Ernest Renan.

Gustave Moreau National Museum

With his rather taciturn temperament, Gustave Moreau was viewed by his contemporaries as a mysterious painter. A professor at the School of Fine Arts beginning in 1892, he would remain within the Fauvian spirit – Matisse, Rouault, Marquet and others – as a master open to new ideas, freedom and colour. At the end of his life, Gustave Moreau (1826-1898) decided to transform his home into a museum that would collect the essence of his work. He expanded the building and recreated several of his earlier compositions in large format. The museum opened its doors in 1903, assembling a collection of 6,000 works by the artist.

Garnier Opera

Built in 1862 by the young architect Charles Garnier in the Second Empire style, it was completed in 1875 at the dawn of the Third Republic. It was the largest opera in the world at the time.

It is interesting to note that this massive structure was built on an underground river which continues to feed a subterranean lake. It is here that the Phantom of the Opera, created by Gaston Leroux, is said to continue his sinister activities.

The Second Empire style is a landmark in operatic architecture, owing particular thanks to the Garnier Opera which stands as a benchmark in this field.

The Opera is a music and dance academy. Famous composers and choreographers, renowned instrumentalists, singers and dancers have given the best of themselves, with a range that extends from despair to the sublime.

It's not easy to get tickets to the ballet, but even if you can't secure them, don't miss the red and gold ambiance of the building itself (the main hall is open from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm)

Sacré-Coeur

Built on the Butte Montmartre, the Romano-Byzantine Basilica of Sacré-Coeur overlooks Paris. It was devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in atonement for the horrors of the Commune and the siege of Paris by the Prussians in 1870. In 1872, the Archbishop of Paris approved construction of a shrine devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The site where Saint Denis, a martyr for the faith, was beheaded at the end of the 3rd century was selected.

Underground gypsum mining tunnels, operated since the Gallo-Roman age beneath the Butte Montmartre, rendered the foundation work even more difficult. Deeper than originally expected, the foundations required a system of piers created from 83 pillars, enabling us to say that today, the Basilica supports the Butte Montmartre, rather than the other way around.

Hours of operation: The Basilica is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
